The Fast Trek
The Fast Trek is a unique 1-2 day backpacking experience, inspired by various ancestral traditions of the past. These ceremonies came in many names and forms such as vision quests, walkabouts, and initiations.
These ceremonies effectively served as rights of passage from childhood to adulthood, but most cultures regularly incorporated these ceremonies throughout ones entire life. The reasons and goals varied from peoples to peoples but some of the most consistent concepts are to become clear about ones life purpose(s), cut distractions and noise, face fears and challenges.
Overall, it could be seen as the pinnacle exercise of proving oneself to themselves. The ceremony ultimately becomes whatever you need it to be. No one does this for a trophy or praise.
It takes the body, mind and spirit to push through inner and outer discomfort. But what's on the other side of this discomfort? Why do it?
only you can answer that.
What to Expect
When Who and How - All Fast Trek ceremonies are guided by Levy Hinojosa, and can include an individual or small group not exceeding 5. Currently all treks are booked via phone, followed by an in person meeting with all participants.
The Hike - The hike starts early. Participants are asked to eat dinner the night before and take eat no food the morning of the trek. The hike can vary from 5 to 10 miles depending on the event.
Currently all Guided Fast Trek events are posted on Facebook, unless scheduled by phone. Click Here to see the latest Guided Fast Trek events on the Root + Rebuild Facebook page.

The Outer
Fasting has many effects on the body. When we fast, we use up stored energy in the form of glucose, and fat. This happens because without any food coming into the system, the body must use its stocked fuel sources to function. Body fat becomes the more favorable fuel to burn the longer the fast becomes.

The Inner
When fully adapted to the fasting process (16 hrs-48 hrs) the mind can become sharper. This happens because the brain uses more fat fuel. Although the brain still needs some glucose to function, the brain can run on ketones just fine, and in some cases, better than on glucose alone. Biologically, when we are hungry our minds need to be sharp to hunt and gather food. In modern times, we can use this edge to think creatively, find solutions to problems, and be more present. When the adaptation period has been overcome, a sense of freedom arises because you are no longer conducting your day around food, or thinking about it.

The All
In this context, spirit is defined as the total accumulation of energy in the person. Fasting helps this energy in ways specific to the individual. It may make your life feel lighter, and clearer. Done for longer periods (24 hrs- 72 hrs+) fasting will make you look within and without for strength to persevere through the period. Individuals may go through challenges during long fasts that make them better at taking on life challenges. The why of the fast becomes very important. Fasting in nature can humble a person making them feel more connected to the environment and in turn, live more mindfully and compassionately
